Being open about our
weaknesses and shortcomings is so important. I think so much of our society,
myself included, is so unexposed to what the world has to offer. Reading is a
window into another society, another lifestyle. Ann Morgan set out to read one
book from every country in the world in a year, she said, “It turns out if you
want to read the world if you want to encounter it with an open mind, the world
will help you.” I think this is such a
cool idea that could be used in a classroom, something that kids could take
ownership of and get excited about. It would allow kids to see reading in a
different light, different than a textbook!

This is really cool! I loved reading when I was a kid because it really took me to new places. For the 3 days it took me to read a Harry Potter book, I was at Hogwarts, and when I read Lois Duncan's suspenseful novels, my heart was racing the whole time. My dream is that every child will be able to appreciate reading, and it starts with finding the particular books that interest them. (75)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Grace! The "around the world" concept is exciting. I'm wondering how we can take that idea and adopt it to content-area classrooms, though. We should talk about this in class.
